Jack, the fox was infamous in the jungle for his mischievous behavior. He used to put other animals in trouble using his clever ideas. Because of his mischiefs, other animals did not like to be his friends. One day Jack, the fox set out on a journey along the jungle. After covering a long distance, he felt tired and decided to take a little bit of rest under a tree. He was equally hungry too. Then, his eyes fell on a crow sitting in the tree. The crow had a piece of meat in the beak. The fox could not stop his temptation and wanted to have it. An idea suddenly crept in his mind. He, with a very soft voice, called the crow. “Your voice is god gifted, whenever I hear you singing, I feel I am lost in heaven.” The crow was amused.
Jack further spiced up the conversation, “Will you sing a song for
me? It will be my biggest pleasure if I hear you from very near.” The crow lost all the control. It could not refuse such a humble request and opened its mouth to sing. Lo! As soon as it opened its beak, the piece of meat fell down. The fox took the piece and said, “You are too foolish to sing a song for me.” The crow understood that it was deceived by the fox. Thus, the fox was able to relinquish his hunger using his master tricks.

People heard a crashing sound and after a blink of an eye, Mehta uncle was seen lying on the road with bloodstains all around. There was a hue and cry. Making no further delay, they called the ambulance and took him to a hospital. Mehta uncle was totally cured now. He thanked Ram and Sham for saving his life. {Outline: Twelve fools start on a journey - cross a river - count

Finally, they decided that they would travel along the country to find some profitable work. Accordingly, they set out on a journey to hunt some profitable work for them. For many a day, they kept on walking and left behind many villages and cities. One day they reached on the bank of a river. They had to swim across the river in order to go ahead. When they reached the other side, they thought that one of their brothers might be left behind and they should check it. The eldest brother counted but found eleven. He was horrified. Each one of them tried to find their lost brother, but could not. How could it be? Actually, each time they were counting, they were omitting the one who was trying to make the tally. Thus skipped, the counting resulted a total of eleven. Then a passerby saw their trouble and understood their foolishness. He, in order to rescue them, gave a blow to each one of them and thus he made a tally of twelve. The brothers were happy to see their brother back. They, then thanked the stranger and happily restarted their journey.

Moral: A foolish man makes a simple situation a terrible one,
whereas the wise make the hardest situation simpler.

Substance writing for class 10 Seba

1. H.S.L.C. 2016 | Substance writing | Class 10 | SEBA

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.kodular.theinfobell.Educately_Assam

Give the substance of the following passage:

It is very difficult to get rid of bad habits. So, one should be very
careful that one does not form bad habits during the early years
of life. idleness is one of such bad habits. Every boy and girl should
be diligent. They should avoid idleness like poison. Some of them
love to remain in bed long after daybreak and get out of bed most
unwillingly. Even after that they waste time over trifles and spend
as little time as they can in reading. As a result, they cannot learn
much as they should.what is worse, they become so accustomed
to such a bad habit that they cannot shake it off- even with their
greatest efforts. This bad habit then holds them hard in its coils
like a large snake.

Answer: Bad habits are very hard to eliminate from life. So, its
formation must be prevented at an early age of life. For that, hard
work is necessary. Idleness is such kind of poisonous bad habit, and
it must be avoided. Waking up too late is perhaps a sign of such
idleness. They like to spend time in fruitless deeds but does not get
involved in useful activities like reading etc. Because of which
learning process is interrupted. If bad habits become a part of one’s
life, that person cannot remove it, even if he or she wishes to do it
so.

2. H.S.L.C. 2017 |Substance writing | Class 10 | SEBA

Give the substance of the following passage:

It is easy to acquire bad habits, such as eating too much food or
eating too many sweets or drinking fluid of any kind or smoking.
The more we do a thing, the more we tend to like doing it and if
we do not continue to do it, we feel unhappy this is called the
force of habit and the force of habit should be fought against.
Things which may be very good when only done from time to time,
tend to become very harmful when done too often and too much.
This applies even to such goods things as work or rest. Some
people form a habit of working too much and others of idling too
much. The wise man always remembers that this is true about
himself and checks any bad habit. He says to himself, “I am now
becoming idle” or “I smoke too much” and then adds, “I will get
myself out of this bad habit at once.”

Answer: Bad habits can be acquired easily simply by doing too much of one kind of activity again and again. Eating, drinking, smoking too much of one thing repeatedly is also a bad habit. The bad habits force us to do the thing or else we feel unhappy. So, we must fight against the force of bad habits. Everything is harmful if done or taken beyond a reasonable limit. It is immaterial whether it is good in nature or bad. For example, rest is good but not too much of it. A wise man is one who continuously checks on his habits and eliminate all such bad habits.

3. H.S.L.C. 2018 |Substance writing | Class 10 | SEBA

Give the substance of the following passage:

Of all the amusements which can possibly be imagined for a
hardworking man after his daily labour there is nothing like
reading an entertaining book. It calls for no bodily exertion, of
which he has had enough. It relives his home of dullness. It
transports him to as livelier and more interesting scene. While he
enjoys himself there, he may forget the evils of the present
moment. Nay, it accompanies him to his next day’s work and if
the book is an interesting one, it gives him something to think of
besides the drudgery of his everyday occupation. If I were to pray
for a taste it would be a taste for reading. Give a man this taste
and the means of gratifying it, you will find a happy man. You
place him in contact with the best writers of every age recorded
in history and then you will find him like a citizen of all nations
and a contemporary of all ages.

Answer: Reading an entertainment book is perhaps the best
refreshment after the daylong hardship of a hardworking man. It
transforms all the dullness into liveliness and an interesting scenario. The book’s refreshing content helps him to forget the curtness of the present moment. The interesting books reenergize the man for his next day and also give him a chance to think beyond his narrow working environment. So, every man should be given the taste of reading an interesting book. And it will in turn create happy people. By giving a chance to the people to meet the great authors, they may be accustomed to live as a contemporary citizen of all world.

4. H.S.L.C. 2019 |Substance writing | Class 10 | SEBA

Give the substance of the following passage:

The work which Gandhiji took up was not only the achievement of
political freedom but also the establishment of a social order based
on truth and nonviolence, unity and peace, equality and universal
brotherhood and maximum freedom for all. The unfinished part of
his experiment was perhaps more difficult to achieve than achieving of political freedom. In the political struggle against a foreign power all one could do was either join it or wish it success and give it their moral support. In establishing a social order of this pattern. There was a likely possibility of a conflict arising between groups and classes of our own people. Experience shows that man values his possessions even more than his life because in the former he sees the means for continuity and survival of his descendants even after body is reduced to ashes. A new order cannot be established without changing the mind, for at some stage or the other rich have to yield place to the poor to achieve a kind of egalitarian society.

Answer: Gandhi’s greater goal was not mere achieving political freedom but rather reforming the society cementing humane values like truth and nonviolence etc. however achieving that goal was not easy. Because of the differences amongst the communities, there was every possibility of arising conflicts. Human beings are more enthusiastic to their possessions than their lives and therefore a social reform is not possible without changing the minds. The differences between the rich and the poor can be removed only if the rich opens up a place for the poor.

The great advantage of early rising is that one can start one’s work
long before others. The early riser has done a large amount of hard
work before other men have got out of bed. Early in the morning the mind is fresh and no sounds or noise disturb our attention. The work done at that time is generally well done. Also, one finds time to take some exercise in the fresh morning air. Exercise supplies him with a good deal of energy that enables him to work hard until the evening. By beginning so early, he knows that he has plenty of time to do his work thoroughly. He does not have to hurry over any part of his work. He gets to sleep long before midnight. Paper is one of the most important articles that we use in our day to
day life. If there had been no paper our civilization would not have
progressed so fast. Great scientists write their thoughts on paper first and then they carry out their experiments. Great engineers draw their plans on paper first and then build houses, bridges, dams, and so on. Great thoughts are written or printed on paper for everyone to read. If there were no paper we would not have all the good books that are available in the world. Without paper it would be difficult for the people of one country to know about the people of another country.

i. Mention three uses of paper.
Answer: Paper has great uses for the civilization. Scientists
work out their new inventions, engineers draw their plans
and great thoughts are either written or printed on paper.

ii. Why is paper the most essential thing for mankind?

Answer: It is the paper on which great thoughts are first
written or printed. From scientists to engineers, they put
their workings first onto the paper. Our civilization has
progressed greatly because of paper as thoughts of one
generation to the next can be transferred through paper.
In fact, paper writes the fate of the mankind, so paper is
a most essential thing for the mankind.

iii. What would have happened if there were no paper?
Answer: If there were no paper, great books could not be
made available to the people. One country could never
know about the people of another country. Even great
thoughts could never be brought into reality. It also had
hampered the works of scientists and engineers and other
thought makers.

Trees help to support man’s life by supplying the atmosphere with
oxygen which is essential to life. The oxygen in the air is constantly
being used up and turned into carbon-di-oxide which is the food that plants ‘eat’. The leaves of trees in fact of all green plants absorb this carbon-di-oxide and with the help of sunlight break it down into carbon and oxygen. The carbon is used to make starch and the oxygen is released into the air, so replacing the oxygen used up by animals. But for this, animals would soon die for lack of oxygen. Starch and other carbon compounds made in the green leaves of trees and of other green plants too, serve as food for animals. The tiny green cells of plants are wonderful laboratories which produce all the starch in the world. But for this service done by plants, all animals would sooner or later die for lack of food.

i. What is the food that the plants ‘eat’?
Answer: The food that the plants ‘eat’ is carbon-dioxide.

ii. How do the green cells of plants serve the animals?
Answer: The green cells of plants absorb this carbondi-oxide and with the help of sunlight break it down into carbon and oxygen. The carbon is used to make starch and the oxygen is released into the air, so replacing the oxygen used up by animals.

iii. How do the leaves of trees break down carbon-dioxide

In life every man has twin obligations- obligation to his family, to his parents, to his wife and children; and he has an obligation to his
people, his community, and his country. In a civil and humane
society, each man is able to fulfill those obligations according to his
own inclinations and abilities. But in a country like South Africa, it
was almost impossible for a man of my birth and colour to fulfill those obligations. In South Africa, a man of colour who attempted to live as a human being was punished and isolated. In South Africa, a man who tried to fulfill his duty to his people was inevitably ripped from his family and his home and was forced to live a life apart, a twilight existence of secrecy and rebellion. I did not, in the beginning, choose to place my people above my family, but in attempting to serve my people, I found that I was prevented from fulfilling my obligations as a son, a brother, a father and a husband.

i. What was done to a man of colour in South Africa
who attempted to live as a human being?
Answer: In South Africa, a man of colour who

Sub: Frequent Load shedding / Power cut in our locality.

Sir,
Through the column of your esteemed daily, I would like to draw
the attention of the concerned authority towards a serious issue faced by our locality. Our locality has been suffering from the irregular power supply and the concerned authority is in sleeping mode. In the modern era, electricity is the driving fuel of the world and one cannot dream a single moment without electricity. But our
locality has been regrettably experiencing unsteady and interrupting
power supply for almost six months now. The side effects are quite
precarious. Towards the evening the power cut shades darkness in our area boasting the courage of the anti-social elements. As the street lights also go out due to power cuts, the roads become prone to accidents. The students are the worst sufferers. They have to light kerosene lamps or candlesticks to finish up their studies. As the matriculation and higher secondary final examination are going on, the candidates are suffering a lot. Even during day hours, the erratic power supply has caused many problems like they cannot fill their water tanks, charge their mobile phones, etc.
In spite of our continuous approach to the Electricity Board, the
authority has not taken any action. Now the authority must replace
the old transformer with a new one. They must ensure steady power supply in our locality or the Board must be responsible for any evils caused by this irregular power supply.

Sub: Frequent road accidents in our city.

Sir,
Through the column of your esteemed daily, I would like to draw
the attention of the concerned authority towards the problem of
frequent road accidents in our city. For the last two months the number of road accidents has been tremendously increasing. More than ten persons have died so far and more than thirty have injured in this period according to a media report. So definitely there is an overwhelming sense of fear amongst the residents of the city. The road accidents are mainly caused due to the harsh biking habits of the youth and drink and drive cases. Moreover, the roads are not wide enough to handle the increasing rush of motor vehicles during morning and afternoon hours. The situation cannot be handled by the few numbers of traffic police the city has. So, the police department of motor vehicles should take proper initiative to recruit more traffic police personnel. The roads should be widened. The youth must exercise great control while driving and parents should not hand over a motorbike to an under eighteen boy.

8. Write a letter to the Editor of a local daily expressing your concern over the incidents of crime against women in Assam. [H.S.L.C. 2019]

The Assam Tribune
Dated: 10th Feb, 2021

Sub: Crime against women in Assam.

Sir,
Through this column of your esteemed daily, I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authority towards a serious issue faced by our state i.e. crime against women. In today’s world, the woman has a discrete role to play towards the growth and development of the country. In ancient days, women had
to face many odd social conventions which curtailed the freedom of
women. Even though modern society has opened its doors to
women, yet the environment in which they have to survive is not as
much more favorable than the one they had ages back. Reportedly there has been shocking growth of crimes against women in Assam. There is at least one news seen published in newspapers reporting such pathetic crimes. Everyday women, have to be a subject of therapists, chain snitches, acid attackers, and whatnot? Witchcraft is a myth. But, in Assam every year many women are lynched in suspect of witchcraft practice. Dowry death has become
very common nowadays in Assam. Very, unfortunately, the number of cases registered for such crimes is increasing day by day. The interesting part here is that many offenses are not reported and go unheard. The society must wake up now. When they talk about equality, they must also provide an unpolluted society for women. The police force must be active and there must be more numbers of women police in the police department. There must be the installation of CCTV cameras in the prone areas. The society must remember that if women are not safe then the society will also be at stake.

10. Write a Letter to the Editor of a local newspaper about Poor Road Condition of your Locality.

To,
The Editor
The Assam Tribune
Dated: 18th Feb, 2020
Sub: Poor road condition of our locality.

Sir,
Through this column of your esteemed daily, I would like to draw
the attention of the concerned authority towards a serious issue faced by our locality i.e. the poor road condition in our locality blocking connectivity with the outer world. Roads connect us to the world outside. Hence it is said that roads lay the connectivity to development. But our locality is not fortunate enough to have good roads. The old roads are severely broken and have become drastic due to poor maintenance. During the rainy season, the roads are flooded and become muddy. The local residents are the worst sufferers. They have much difficulty to go through this road to
their workplaces. Even the school going students also have to face all the troubles. One cannot think of riding even riding a motorcycle smoothly. The poor road condition has led to accidents several times. The root of this entire road problem is because of poor maintenance by the PWD. Our locality has tried to draw the attention of the authority in their several applications made to the authority. But all the efforts are in vain. So, the authority must consider the issue now and ensure the gravelling of the road.
