1 Answer the following questions :

 
(i) By whom was the tiger cub discovered? 

Answer: The tiger cub was discovered by the Narrator's Grandfather.


ii) Where was it discovered?

Answer: The tiger cub was discovered by the narrator's grandfather on a hunting expedition in the Terai jungle near Dehra.

 
iii) What was the name of the tiger cub?

Answer: Timothy was the name of the tiger cub.

 iv) Who named it?

Answer: Timothy was named by narrator's grandfather.

(v) What were the two companions of the tiger cub in grandfather's house? 

Answer: Toto the monkey, and a small mongrel puppy were the two companions of the tiger cub in grandfather's house.


vi) What was the favorite place of the tiger cub in the house? 

Answer: The favorite place of the tiger cub in the house was the drawing room, and he would make himself comfortable on the long sofa,

 
vii) What was the visible change of the tiger cub when it was six months old?

Answer: When timothy was about six months a change came over him, e grew steadily less friendly.

Answer:  When timothy was about six months a change came over him, he grew steadily less friendly. Timothy had to be chained more often. And finally, when he began to stalk Mahmoud with villainous intent, grandfather decided to transferred him to a zoo.

Answer:  The grandfather was annoyed by the leopard when he went to meet his tiger in the Zoo. He was very frustrated by that leopard because whenever timothy came closer to him the leopard would rush at the bars, and the timothy would slink back to his corner.

The verbs in italics are in the past continuous tense. Find six examples of
verbs in the past continous tense in the text and write them down.

4. Notice the following sentences-

 
a) He said, "I am reading now".

The first sentence is in direct speech. Direct speech shows what people
actually said. Reported (or indirect) speech is how we later report this,
making changes to the words the speaker originally said. Second sen
tence is in reported speech. 


Now turn the following sentences into reported speech-

 
(i) The keeper said to grandfather, "Timothy died of Pneumonia two  months ago." 

Answer: The keeper told grandfather that Timothy died of Pneumonia two months ago.

(ii) Grandfather said to the keeper, "The leopard keeps frightening the
tiger" 

Answer: Grandfather told keeper that leopard kept frightening the tiger.

iii) The keeper said to grandfather, "Please continue your conversa-tion." 

Answer:  The keeper requested grandfather to continue their conversation.

(iv) Grandfather said, "Why don't you put him somewhere else?"

Answer: Grandfather asked why don't they put him somewhere else?

 
(v) Grandfather said, "Goodnight, Timothy"

Answer: Grandfather wished goodnight to Timothy.

5. Find out the meaning of the following words by looking them up in the dictionary. Then use them in sentences of your own.

(a) Tickle: lightly touch or prod

Grandfather tickled Timothy under the chin.

(b)  Smack: A Sharp slap or blow.

 6. Do you have a pet? Write a short paragraph on your pet. 

I Have a pet tiger named Timothy, it was discovered by my Grandfather
on a hunting expedition in the Terai jungle near Dehra. It's colour is orange with black stripped. It is eighteen inches long. Toto the monkey, and a small mongrel puppy are the two companions of the timothy. Timothy's favourite amusements is to stalk anyone who could play with him. His favourite place in the house is drawing room, their he make himself comfortable on the long sofa. Timothy had clean habits, and would scrub his face with his paws exactly like a cat. He slept at night in the cook's quarters. He is happy living with us.


7. Make a visit to the zoo and write a paragraph on it using the following points. You can use some of your own. Paste some pictures of birds and
animals you have seen there.


*your journey to the zoo.
* birds and animals you have seen there.
*the name of the places where they are found. 

* their eating habits. *
*your return journey.


8. Write a short paragraph (in about 30 words) on the tiger cub's habits.

Answer: One of the Timothy's favourite amusement was to stalk anyone who can play with him.  Timothy had clean habits, and would scrub his face with his paws exactly like a cat.
